Manchester United have received a fresh boost in their pursuit of Crystal Palace maestro Adam Wharton as the club’s summer plans begin to take shape, according to the latest report.

The Red Devils are prioritising an overhaul of the midfield after years of neglecting the most important part of the pitch.

Elliot Anderson is understood to be the first-choice target. The 23-year-old has established himself as one of the finest midfielders in the Premier League since joining Nottingham Forest from Newcastle United two years ago.

However, it would be quicker to list which members of Europe’s elite are not actively monitoring the England international, with competition expected to be fierce for his services this summer.

Brighton & Hove Albion starlet Carlos Baleba, 21, remains high on United’s radar after a failed pursuit last year. The Cameroon international suffered a dip in form earlier in the season, but a series of dominant displays at the African Cup of Nations served as a reminder of his talents.

Wharton is the third name on the wish list at Old Trafford, with the 21-year-old midfielder offering a comparable profile to the club’s caretaker manager, Michael Carrick. The former Blackburn Rovers star does not possess the same level of athleticism or defensive doggedness as his two domestic competitors, but he wields a wand of a left foot and demonstrates excellent football IQ across all phases of play.

If ever there was an embodiment of brain over brawn, it would be Wharton – as it was Carrick two decades ago. And this skillset is certainly appreciated by United, with executives considering the Palace man a “generational talent” who would “immediately control the engine room” at Old Trafford.

Asking price is slashed
It was believed that all three midfielders would cost upwards of £100 million this summer as the dreaded Premier League tax struck again.

And while this valuation is likely to hold true for Anderson and Baleba, TEAMtalk reports Palace are now willing to entertain offers for Wharton starting at £65m, with acknowledgement at Selhurst Park this season will be his last.

“Crystal Palace have accepted that they will lose Adam Wharton at the end of the season, sources confirm, as Manchester United rival Tottenham and other Premier League sides for his signature.

“Sources close to the situation state that Palace have an understanding with the 21-year-old midfielder: he will see out the current campaign in south London, contributing to their push for further European qualification under Oliver Glasner.

“Wharton’s valuation has fluctuated, but sources state Palace will demand around a £65million base fee, with add-ons.”

This constitutes a dramatic slash in price – which significantly increases the likelihood that United will be able to afford not just one of their first-choice targets in midfield, but two.

If the Red Devils were able to agree a deal worth an initial £65m for Wharton, while spending the bulk of their budget on a £100m raid for Baleba, for example, this would provide a radical overhaul of the midfield.

It would then allow the pursuit of upgrades in other areas, most notably left wing, through sales, with a host of players set to leave Old Trafford this summer.

The fact that United’s main competitor for Wharton appears to be Tottenham Hotspur, rather than Manchester City or Liverpool as it would be for Anderson, only strengthens the viability of this plan.
