Los Angeles Dodgers utility player Tommy Edman had surgery on his right ankle following the team’s World Series victory over the Toronto Blue Jays. He had battled the injury through much of the 2025 MLB season and waited until the season concluded to address it.

Edman spent two separate stints on the injured list with a sprained right ankle, the second beginning in August. The Dodgers gradually eased him back into play, hoping extra rest would allow the ankle to stabilize, but the problem persisted deep into the postseason.

As a result, Edman mostly made appearances in the infield and didn’t move to center field until the World Series made it necessary. Nonetheless, with spring training approaching, Dodgers president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman shared an update on the player during his Jan. 29 appearance on Dodgers Territory.

“The arrow is pointing up, just went and got evaluated again for that checkup, and everything is pointed in a good direction,” Friedman said. “Exactly what that means, we don’t know yet. Until we really start ramping up baseball activity, getting them in spikes, and doing it day after day after day, how the body responds will dictate a lot of it.”

Last season, Edman’s injury-plagued campaign limited him to posting a .225 batting average with 78 hits, 13 home runs, 49 RBIs, and 49 runs scored in 97 games, per StatMuse.Dodgers Will Steer on the Side Of Caution With Tommy Edman

With the Dodgers having a loaded lineup following the arrival of outfielder Kyle Tucker, Los Angeles isn’t going to be careless with Edman and will be extra cautious with their versatile player to ensure that 2026 is a healthier campaign.

“We’re not going to be foolish and try to cut corners, but that being said, we’re also not going to artificially hold him back,” Friedman added. “We’ll have a much better feel as we get into February. By late February, we’ll have an idea whether we have the runway to safely build them up and be ready, or if we don’t.

“If we don’t, we feel really good about Alex Freeland, Hyeseong Kim, Andy Ibáñez, Miguel Rojas. We just have a combination of guys that we feel like can help hold down that spot for us and do it at a pretty high level.”

Last season showed that the Dodgers will treat all their big leaguers’ injuries with kid gloves to ensure that, once they return to the field, they can be as effective as possible. Los Angeles was cautious with Roki Sasaki and Edman, so this approach appears to be the norm for the Dodgers, given the depth in their lineup.

“It’s going well,” Edman said. “Just kind of recovering day at a time, you know, slowly but surely. I think I got to be in the boot for a couple more weeks, and then get moving around Christmas time and hopefully be 100 percent for next year.”
