Angels’ dice-roll trade mercifully took a Mariners pest out of the AL West
As reported by MLB.com’s Jake Rill, the Los Angeles Angels traded outfielder Taylor Ward to the Baltimore Orioles in exchange for pitcher Grayson Rodriguez on Tuesday. Understandably, there will be plenty of people wondering why the heck we’re even mentioning this on a website dedicated to the Seattle Mariners, aside from the deal involving one of their divisional rivals.

Well, as much as Ward is not a household name by any stretch of the imagination, he’s been a solid player who has managed to carve out an eight-year Major League career and along the way batted .247 with a .766 OPS and 111 OPS+. In addition, he’s someone who the Mariners aren’t going to miss now that he’s been traded out of the AL West.

Some folks might wonder what the big deal is about a player who only batted .189 and struck out 45 times over the past three seasons versus the Mariners. However, as much as he hasn’t killed them per se, he also hit seven home runs and eight doubles against the M’s between 2023-25, with the 15 overall extra-base hits being his most versus any team during this time period.

As for who will ultimately win the deal between the Angels and Orioles, it’s tough to say although it does represent a fun trade with some intrigue for both sets of fans. In terms of pure potential, Rodriguez is at least theoretically the better talent, but this has been compromised by his seeming inability to remain healthy in Baltimore.

Selected 11th overall in the 2018 draft by the Orioles, the 26-year-old was considered a top-10 prospect by MLB Pipeline as recently as 2023. Ranked No. 7 overall in baseball’s top 100, he had an array of weapons at his disposal, highlighted by a four-seamer which touched triple figures.

Rodriguez did show flashes of what he was capable of at the Major League level in 2023 and 2024, notably with really good Stuff+ scores as per FanGraphs. And it really looked as if he was beginning to come into his own during that second season with the Orioles, as he went 13-4 in 20 starts while producing a 3.86 ERA and 130 strikeouts over 116.2 combined innings.

Again though, the towering pitcher has struggled with injuries throughout much of his career, including missing all of the 2025 season due to issues with his right elbow which eventually required surgery. The Mariners should consider themselves warned though. If the righty is able to stay healthy moving forward and at least partly fulfil his potential, then he will conceivably replace Ward as another pest for them to contend with in the division.
