he Toronto Blue Jays lost to the Los Angeles Dodgers in the World Series, and now the team could sign a former player from them.
Toronto’s roster had plenty of utility players, as it allowed manager John Schneider to make plenty of changes with pinch-hitters and runners. So, the Blue Jays will likely look to add more players with positional flexibility.
Blue Jays analyst Graeme Wallace of BlueJaysNation links Toronto to signing former Dodgers star Chris Taylor to add some more roster flexibility.
“From 2017 to 2021, Taylor was a mainstay on some successful Dodgers teams, including the 2020 and 2024 World Series winners,” Wallace wrote. “During that time, the super utilityman hit 78 home runs with a .804 OPS and accumulated a WAR of 14.5. The 35-year-old struggled in 2022, but recovered the next season, albeit in a reduced role. Over the last two seasons, the wheels fell off for Taylor. …
“He could hang it up, but if Taylor makes the team on a minor-league deal and is near even his ‘23 form, he’d fit nicely into the Whit Merrifield-like role on the 2022-23 circa teams. This would bode well if Bichette departs and Ernie Clement plays every day again in 2026.”
Taylor began the 2025 MLB season with the Dodgers. After being released in May, he signed with the Los Angeles Angels but dealt with injuries.
Taylor would likely have to sign a minor-league contract with the Blue Jays, but if he’s healthy, it could be a smart move to add him to add more depth to the roster.
Taylor Thought it Was Time to Leave the Dodgers
The Dodgers released Taylor back in May, which ended his tenure with the team.
After he signed with the Angels, Taylor said he thought it was time to move on.
“It was emotional. I’ve been on the Dodgers for nine years, but I do believe it was time, for me,” Taylor told reporters. “It was my time to kind of start fresh, you know, hopefully turn the page, start a new chapter. I’m excited to do that here.”
Dodgers manager Dave Roberts, meanwhile, said moving on from Taylor was tough to do, but the team felt it was best for him to get more playing time.
“He wanted an opportunity to play more and if it wasn’t going to be here, to play somewhere else,” Roberts said. “That’s kind of the thought behind how it played out. I respect him for betting on himself. Hopefully, he gets an opportunity to play more somewhere else.”
Taylor was the NLCS MVP in 2017 and won the World Series in 2020 and 2024 with the Dodgers. He was also an All-Star in 2021.
Blue Jays Will Have Money to Spend
Toronto does have a key free agent in Bo Bichette, who the Blue Jays are hoping to bring back.
Although the Blue Jays have been linked to several high-profile players, Toronto will also look to add more depth to the team.
However, Blue Jays president and CEO Mark Shapiro said he expects the payroll to stay around the same, if not increase.
“What is clear is that we’ve had an unprecedented level of support, and I don’t see that support going backwards at all,” Shapiro said after the season.
Toronto finished the 2025 season with the fifth-highest payroll.
