The Denver Nuggets faced a surprising 128-117 setback against the Golden State Warriors on Sunday, even with Dub Nation missing their star players. Nikola Jokic delivered an impressive 35-20-12 performance, but it just wasn’t enough to secure the win.

This season has been a rollercoaster for Denver. Injuries have plagued the team, affecting their ability to maintain consistent victories. Even Jokic had to sit out 17 games due to a hyperextended left knee.

Currently, the Nuggets boast a 36-22 record. While solid, they’re third in the Western Conference, trailing first place by eight games.

This is concerning for a team once seen as title contenders alongside the OKC Thunder. Jokic himself voiced concerns as the season heads into its crucial final stretch.

“I’m definitely concerned because we are losing the games, and we’re not creating open looks. So, that’s something that we need to change.

Hopefully, we get better. I don’t know what it is, but we need to figure it out,” Jokic shared after the Warriors game.

Jokic’s worries are understandable. Despite winning 62% of their games and being on track for a better record than last season, he doubts their current form is championship material.

The Nuggets’ struggles in close games are evident. They rank 16th in the league for clutch situations, losing 14 of 30 tight contests. They can secure wins with a comfortable lead, but closing out tight games remains a challenge.

Head coach David Adelman echoed Jokic’s concerns, expressing dissatisfaction with the team’s effort. “We were not ready to play.

This has been a tough weekend for us with the game time, the back-to-back, and all that,” he said. “But that has nothing to do with your approach to the game.

We gave them confidence early. Their energy surpassed ours; they played harder.”

Golden State took control early, building a 12-point lead in the first quarter and extending it to 14 in the second. Denver attempted a comeback but couldn’t withstand another offensive surge, particularly from Brandin Podziemski, who dropped 14 points in the fourth quarter.

With the trade deadline behind them, the Nuggets must resolve their issues internally. The silver lining is Jokic’s return to full health, and players like Cameron Johnson are finding consistency in their minutes.

However, the absence of Aaron Gordon and Peyton Watson could pose challenges in maintaining consistent wins. Upcoming games against the Boston Celtics, OKC Thunder, Minnesota Timberwolves, and Los Angeles Lakers will be crucial.
