The New York Yankees are facing early-season rotation concerns in 2026, with key starters Gerrit Cole and Carlos Rodón recovering from surgeries and expected to miss the start of the year. But a bold prediction could change that dramatically: the Bombers are forecasted to land former NL Cy Young Award winner Sandy Alcántara from the Miami Marlins in a midseason blockbuster.

According to Yankees insider Pete Caldera of NorthJersey.com, New York could pull off a late-July trade sending pitcher Will Warren, top prospect Bryce Cunningham, and potentially additional pieces to Miami in exchange for Alcántara.

“Will Warren and pitching prospect Bryce Cunningham are part of a late July trade package to Miami in exchange for Marlins starter Sandy Alcántara,” Caldera predicted in his 2026 Yankees projections.

Alcántara, the unanimous 2022 NL Cy Young winner and a two-time All-Star, would provide an immediate upgrade. By mid-summer, he could slot in as the No. 4 starter behind Cole, Max Fried, and Rodón—forming one of the most formidable playoff rotations in baseball.

Despite a challenging 2025 season (11-12, 5.36 ERA in 31 starts post-Tommy John recovery), Alcántara remains under control through 2026 at $17 million, with a $21 million club option for 2027. At just 30 years old, his track record as a workhorse makes him an intriguing bounce-back candidate.

In the proposed deal, the Yankees would part with Warren—a reliable back-end starter who posted a 9-8 record and 4.44 ERA over 33 starts in his first full big-league season in 2025—and Cunningham, the team’s fifth-ranked prospect. The 2024 second-round pick spent his debut pro year dominating at High-A.

Alcántara’s name has swirled in trade rumors for years, but the Marlins have held firm. Recent reports indicate Miami would only move him for an overwhelming offer, preferring to keep their ace unless the team struggles early in 2026.

Yankees GM Brian Cashman has expressed confidence in the rotation once healthy, noting vulnerabilities early due to injuries but praising the group’s potential when firing on all cylinders.

If the Marlins falter out of the gate, however, a midseason deal could become realistic—giving the Yankees a massive boost for a deep playoff run. Holy cow, indeed!
