Now, Tuesday was a little more like what we were expecting out of the Winter Meetings. We saw our first big money deal of the event go down, as Kyle Schwarber chose to re-sign with the Phillies on a five-year, $150 million deal over a matching offer from the Orioles and some slightly less-valuable offers from a number of other suitors including the Reds and Pirates. On top of that, Edwin Díaz surprisingly went to the Dodgers in the first big move of the offseason for the two-time defending champs, signing a three-year, $69 million deal that narrowly came ahead of the offer that the Mets gave their now-former closer.
That’s all well and good, but the Yankees haven’t been particularly active yet! There was one new rumor related to them checking in on the Brewers’ Trevor Megill, but otherwise we’ve been waiting for the shoe to drop on one of their big decisions for the 2026 roster. Will it come today, as the meetings reach their conclusion? There’s only one way to find out, so tune in throughout the day as we update you on whatever goes down or gets discussed.
Rumors of the Day (December 10)
3:10 PM: The Rule 5 Draft has come and gone. Michael has a full write-up for us. Go check it out because the Yankees actually made a selection for the first time in 14 years! It’s Cardinals righty Cade Winquest. Also, they didn’t lose anyone in the major-league phase.
1:50 PM: Here’s an odd Yankees rumor which we only put so much stock in because it’s not from a New York/national outlet. Boston reporter Ari Alexander says that the Yankees are one of four teams interested in Rockies outfielder Brenton Doyle. It’s unlikely that this would be in a starting role because the dude can’t hit. It’s also odd because Doyle’s a center fielder and Trent Grisham is back on the qualifying offer, so one of them would have to shift to left. Take it for what you will.
12:55 PM: Big news from Baltimore, as they actually spent some money for once! It’s true that they were spurned by Corbin Burnes and Kyle Schwarber on legitimately competitive offers the past couple offseasons, but now they’ve found someone to take the money: Pete Alonso. Per Jeff Passan, the Mets’ career home run leader is departing Flushing for a five-year, $155 million deal, a smidge higher than what Schwarber turned down from the O’s yesterday. The former crosstown rival is now a division rival. Fascinating.
9:55 AM: Our first Yankees item of the day is just a quick note of, well, non-Yankees action. Brian Cashman told beat reporter Gary Phillips that they were not at all in on Edwin Díaz. The Bombers need relief help but they were seemingly hesitant to give out a big-money deal to a reliever; the former Mets fireman earned an MLB reliever record $23 million AAV. This follows the pattern of previous years, essentially ever since they got burned by the Aroldis Chapman and Zack Britton contracts.
Cashman did also say that their pursuit of Cody Bellinger would not affect their ability to pursue other notable names, like what happened last year with Juan Soto while Blake Snell and Willy Adames went off the board. (He later said a bunch of other word salad nonsense about fan perception of finances, which you can read here.)
Unlike last winter, when they were waiting on Juan Soto, Brian Cashman said the #Yankees can make moves while they wait on Cody Bellinger.
However, Cashman described the market as glacial.

Nadie Apareció Cuando Mi Hijo Fue Operado. Tres Días Después, Mi Mamá Me Envió Un Mensaje: “Necesito 200,000 Pesos Para El Vestido De Boda De Tu Hermana.”
