1955

Losing Team: New York Yankees

Playing in their eighth World Series — and their sixth against the Yankees, the Dodgers finally break through to win their only baseball championship in Brooklyn. Series MVP Johnny Podres shuts out the Yanks, 2-0, in Game 7 at Yankee Stadium.

1959

Losing Team: Chicago White Sox

In just the second season in their new city, the Dodgers, playing home games in the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, bring L.A. its first World Series trophy. Pitcher Larry Sherry earns a win or save in every Dodger victory, including the deciding Game 6.

1963

Losing Team: New York Yankees

Pitchers Sandy Koufax, Don Drysdale and Johnny Podres throttle Yankee hitters as the team sweeps its former tormentors, winning Game 4 at Dodger Stadium in just the ballpark’s second season. It’s the only time the Dodgers have celebrated a championship on their home field.

1965

Losing Team: Minnesota Twins

Koufax spins a shutout in Game 7 in Minneapolis, earning his second World Series MVP Award in three years. He retires the following season at age 30, citing chronic arthritis in his pitching arm.

1981

Losing Team: New York Yankees

The dawn of Fernandomania: Fernando Valenzuela caps his astounding rookie season with a victory in Game 3, and the Dodgers get revenge for World Series losses to the Yankees in 1978 and ’79. L.A. sweeps the final four games, including Game 6 in New York.

1988

Losing Team: Oakland A’s

“In a year that has been so improbable, the impossible has happened!” is Vin Scully’s call of the two-run, ninth-inning homer by Kirk Gibson, who limps out of the Dodger dugout to pinch hit in his only at-bat of the Series. Orel Hershiser, who pitches the team to two victories, including the Game 5 finale, is MVP.

2020

Losing Team: Tampa Bay Rays

In a pandemic-shortened season, baseball holds all World Series games in Arlington, Texas, and lets less than 12,000 fans attend each contest to ensure social distancing. Clayton Kershaw pitches the Dodgers to victory in Games 1 and 5, and Corey Seager, who hits .400 for the six-game Series, is voted MVP. Dodger third baseman Justin Turner leaves Game 6 in the eighth inning after testing positive for COVID.

2024

Losing Team: New York Yankees

Freddie Freeman belts four homers in the first four games and knocks in 12 runs over the five-game Series to earn MVP honors. A fan’s banner in Yankee Stadium calls out the pain in the Big Apple: “Freddie, Please Stop.”

2025

Losing Team: Toronto Blue Jays

Yoshinobu Yamamoto earns wins in three of the four Dodger victories, pitching the final three innings in Game 7 after going six innings the night before. “To tell Dave Roberts you’re still OK to go out there takes a lot of bravery,” Hershiser, now a team broadcaster, tells Los Angeles. “It takes a lot of strength. It takes a lot of understanding yourself. And I think you’ve got to be slightly crazy.”
